The Brains Behind the Brain Alliance: Bernadette Fitzgibbon
Dr Bernadette Fitzgibbon is a Senior Research Fellow at Monash University and heads the “Pain and Affective Neuroscience Unit” at the Monash Alfred Psychiatry research centre (MAPrc).
- What sparked your interest in neuroscience?
I’ve always been interested in the behaviour of others. This transferred into an interest in neuroscience when I began learning about biology and, more specifically, the biology of behaviour.
- Why do we need to crack the brains code?
To ensure we have the right knowledge to treat complex brain disorders that affect a large number of the world’s population.
- If you weren’t a Senior Research Fellow what would you be instead?
A med tech entrepreneur, because commercialisation and industry allows for translating discoveries on a larger scale.
- What’s your favourite fact about the brain?
That the brain changes its structure and function in response to our experiences, which means that the brain never stops changing.
